How to Integrate ERP, PDM and MES: Ownership Before APIs

ERP, PDM and MES integration should start by assigning ownership for item masters, BOMs, drawings and states—not by choosing an API. Define field mappings, version rules, exceptions and retries before selecting APIs, databases or controlled batch synchronization.
Define the system of record
The same part number may exist in ERP, PDM and MES, but that does not mean every system should edit every field.
- Assign ownership for each data object and attribute.

- Create, update, obsolete and republish flows.
- Missing required data, duplicates and invalid states.
- Volume, delayed schedules and recovery after downtime.
- Access denial, disabled accounts and audit queries.

Must integration use APIs?
No. APIs, databases, queues, files or controlled batches may be appropriate depending on vendor support, consistency and operating responsibility.
Can we integrate only item masters or BOMs first?
Yes. One data object is easier to govern and provides a reusable pattern for monitoring and exception handling.
Does integration remove every manual approval?
Not necessarily. High-risk changes may retain approval while integration removes duplicate input and preserves traceability.
